Description

Abstract / Description:
This topographic dataset shows the extent and names (if available) of airports and aerodromes within the State of Queensland.
Purpose:
To provide digital data displaying the extent and names (if available) of airports and aerodromes within the State of Queensland. The primary objective of this dataset is to provide a cartographic portrayal of Queensland's constructed features and should be interpreted and utilised correctly. It is suitable for use in land administration, emergency management, topographic mapping and in the production of web based mapping applications.
Additional Information:
Features within this dataset have been captured or updated from the best available imagery with an attribute within the data describing the source and reliability. Data sources include but not limited to:
- Queensland Orthophotography
- Queensland Digital Cadastral Database
- Queensland Topographic, Cadastral and Historic Mapping
- Satellite Imagery
- Geoscience Australia 100000 and 250000 Topographic Data

Name sources include but not limited to:
- Local Government Websites
- Queensland Topographic, Cadastral and Historic Mapping
- Geoscience Australia 100000 and 250000 Topographic Data

Feature Types:
AIRPORT AREA - The defined area of a facility licensed, certified or registered by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority intended to be used either wholly or in part for the arrival, departure and surface movement of aircraft and associated cargo.

Function:
AERODROME – A level tract of land, maybe equipped with hard surfaced runways, buildings etc. for the operation and maintenance of mainly light aircraft.
DOMESTIC AIRPORT – A landing and taking off area for civil aircraft, usually equipped with runways, aircraft maintenance and passenger facilities and where regular scheduled domestic airline travel by larger national airlines is available
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT – A landing and taking off area for civil aircraft, equipped with runways, aircraft maintenance and passenger, customs and immigration facilities and regular scheduled domestic and international airline travel is available
REGIONAL AIRPORT - A landing and taking off area for civil aircraft, usually equipped with runways, aircraft maintenance and passenger facilities and where regular scheduled domestic airline travel by smaller regional airlines is available

Usage:
CIVIL – Primarily used by civilian aircraft
CIVIL - MILTARY – Used by both civilian and military aircraft on a regular basis
MILITARY – Restricted to military use only

Attributes:
FEATURE_TYPE (Feature Type) - Unique feature type that identifies the type of feature. e.g. Airport Area
FUNCTION (Function) - A description of the function of the airport (options: Aerodrome, Domestic Airport, International Airport or Regional Airport)
NAME (Name) - The name of the feature (if available)
ATTRIBUTE_SOURCE (Attribute Source) - The source imagery, map, or data used for attributing the feature. If the feature is named, the attribution would be the source map or data where the name of the feature (if available) was obtained from. If the feature is not named, the attribution is the source imagery, map, or data which defines what the feature is e.g., aerodrome
ATTRIBUTE_DATE (Attribute Date) - Date of the source imagery, map, or data used for attributing the feature.
ADDITIONAL_NAMES (Additional Names) - Other names of the feature. Maybe commonly known by other names or have different spelling. Multiple names can be shown, separated by a comma.
ADD_NAMES_SOURCE (Additional Names Source) - The source map or data that the additional names of the feature were obtained from. Multiple sources can be shown, separated by a comma. If multiple sources are shown, the written sequence will be the same as the written sequence of the names themselves.
FEATURE_SOURCE (Feature Source) - The source imagery, map, or data that the spatial location and shape of the of the feature was obtained from.
FEATURE_DATE (Feature Date) - Date of the source imagery, map, or data that the spatial location and shape of the feature was obtained from.
OPERATIONAL_STATUS (Operational Status) - The operational status of the feature. (options: Abandoned, Dismantled, Operational, Non Operational, Proposed or Under Construction)
USAGE (Usage) - The description of the type of civil and/or military use of the feature. (Options: Civil, Civil - Military or Military)
PFI (PFI) - A Persistent Feature Identifier (PFI) is generated once for each feature at the point of creation. The value of the PFI will stay with the feature through all changes to the feature (both spatial and non-spatial) until the feature is retired.
UFI (UFI) - A Unique Feature Identifier (UFI) is generated once for each new feature at the point of creation (at this point the PFI and UFI will be the same). The value of the UFI will stay with the feature through all changes to the feature (both spatial and non-spatial) unless the feature is split into multiple other parts. If the feature is split, the separate parts will retain the original PFI but new UFI’s will be generated for the split parts.
DIMENSION_M2 (Dimension (m²)) - The area of the feature measured in square metres (Albers projection)
UPPER_SCALE (Upper Scale) - The upper scale for which the feature should be considered suitable
TEXT_NOTE (Text Note) - For mapping purposes. Additional annotation that can be shown on a map.
ADD_INFORMATION (Additional Information) - A comment field (additional information)

For areas of flat land used by small aeroplanes for landing and take-off and having only rudimentary facilities, or none at all, refer to the "Landing Grounds" feature class. These features are generally associated with outback rural properties.

This dataset is stored in an ESRI Geodatabase. Some columns names may be shortened if downloaded in the ESRI shape format.

Data Quality

Data quality scope:
Level: dataset
Completeness (omission):

The collection of feature types will be complete.
Consistency (conceptual):

Data should be free from overshoots, undershoots, duplicate lines and agree with Topographic Data Product Description requirements with a 5% error status
Positional accuracy (external, absolute):

The horizontal positional accuracy of the data that has been used to compile this dataset is as follows: Orthophotography +/- 1m, Satellite Imagery +/- 2.5m. The horizontal positional accuracy of DCDB is dependent on the accuracy of the DCDB at the time of extraction.
Attribute accuracy (non quantitative):

Attribution is completed and agrees with Topographic Data Product Description requirements.

History:

Lineage statement:
The data has been compiled from numerous sources to produce a state wide coverage with the boundary of the property extent containing the facility aligned in most cases with the Queensland spatial cadastre. If it is more appropriate to follow fence lines or other feature than orthorectified imagery will be used. In remote locations, the end of mown grass or cleared area may be the most suitable extent.

This dataset is GDA2020 Compliant. The source data, and therefore the captured features, were captured as GDA94 (horizontal only). This data has been projected to GDA2020 by using ArcGIS Pro geoprocessing tool Project geoprocessing. Using geographic transformation parameters ‘GDA94 to GDA2020 NTv2 3 Conformal’.

The data has also been processed to remove any redundant vertices by using ArcGIS Pro’s Simplify Polygon geoprocessing tool. Retain critical points (Douglas-Peucker) method was used for the Simplification Algorithm and a Simplification tolerance of 0.25m. The data was further processed using an ESRI validation in a Repair Geometry geoprocessing tool and deleting any features with Null geometry.
