MONORAIL – An elevated railway running on a single line and generally used for tourist purposes
RAILWAY – A permanent way having one or more rails which provides a track for trains (also known as heavy rail)
RAILWAY SIDING – A stretch of railroad tracks connected to the main track by switches used for temporary storage and loading or unloading of trains.
SUGAR CANE RAILWAY – A railway built specifically to carry small trains carrying sugar cane from the cane fields to the sugar mills for processing
TOURIST - HISTORIC RAILWAY – A railway that has been built specifically for the use of tourist or one that has been preserved for historical purposes.
OTHER RAILWAY – A railway not covered by any of the above.

Gauge:
LIGHT – 610 mm wide
NARROW – 1067 mm wide
STANDARD – 1435 mm
NARROW - LIGHT (Dual tracks running parallel with one rail in common)
STANDARD - NARROW - (Dual tracks running parallel with one rail in common)
OTHER RAILWAY GAUGE – Not covered by any of the above

ADD_NAMES_SOURCE (Additional Names Source) - The source map or data that the additional names of the feature were obtained from. Multiple sources can be shown, separated by a comma. If multiple sources are shown, the written sequence will be the same as the written sequence of the names themselves.
FEATURE_SOURCE (Feature Source) - The source imagery, map, or data that the spatial location and shape of the of the feature was obtained from.
FEATURE_DATE (Feature Date) - Date of the source imagery, map, or data that the spatial location and shape of the feature was obtained from.
OPERATIONAL_STATUS (Operational Status) - The operational status of the feature. (options: Abandoned, Dismantled, Operational, Non Operational, Proposed or Under Construction)
GAUGE (Gauge) - The width of tracks. (options: Light, Narrow, Narrow – Light, Standard, Standard – Narrow, Other Railway Gauge, Non Applicable)
ELECTRIFIED (Electrified) - Is the track electrified? (options: Electrified, Non Electrified, Non Applicable)
CONSTRUCTION_TYPE (Construction Type) - Type of construction (options: Bridge, Causeway, Elevated, Overpass, Surface, Tunnel)
USAGE (Usage) - A description of the major use the feature. (options: Freight, Freight - Passenger, Mining, Mining – Freight, Mining – Freight - Passenger, Passenger, Rail Freight Facility, Rail Siding, Rail Yard, Railway Workshop, Stabling Yard, Sugar Cane, Tourist – Historic Railway, Other Railway Usage, Non Applicable)
RAILWAY_OWNER (Railway Owner) -The name of the owner/maintainer of the railway. Most non-government railways will be labelled “Private”
PFI (PFI) - A Persistent Feature Identifier (PFI) is generated once for each feature at the point of creation. The value of the PFI will stay with the feature through all changes to the feature (both spatial and non-spatial) until the feature is retired.
UFI (UFI) - A Unique Feature Identifier (UFI) is generated once for each new feature at the point of creation (at this point the PFI and UFI will be the same). The value of the UFI will stay with the feature through all changes to the feature (both spatial and non-spatial) unless the feature is split into multiple other parts. If the feature is split, the separate parts will retain the original PFI but new UFI’s will be generated for the split parts.
DIMENSION_M (Dimension (m)) - The length of the feature measured in metres (Albers projection)
UPPER_SCALE (Upper Scale) - The upper scale for which the feature should be considered suitable
TEXT_NOTE (Text Note) - For mapping purposes. Additional annotation that can be shown on a map.
ADD_INFORMATION (Additional Information) - A comment field (additional information)

History:

Lineage statement:
A spatial and attribute upgrade of the data supplied by QRAIL in 2006 and Geoscience Australia (GA) was performed from July 2016 to June 2018 and is continuing to be performed on an ongoing basis. This current upgrade was completed in December 2019. The spatial upgrade used information from Queensland Rail railway line diagrams EAMS 04 Update 9, October 2019 and Aurizon line diagrams CNA Changes Review of June 2019 ARTC line diagram ARTCS3090006 of 2010. This has been combined with information from 1:100,000 Transverse Mercator topographic maps, heads-up digitising of digital aerial photography, information from the Queensland Digital Cadastral Database (DCDB) and data from privately owned railways. Updates have been made on all the data in Queensland except for a number of sugar cane railways. An attribute upgrade of rail gauges and the ownership of railway infrastructure has been performed over all of Queensland.

Some private railways such as cane lines are included when captured under the GA large scale mapping program or DNRME topographic capture programs. Geoscience Australia commenced this program of large scale revision mapping and data revision over Australia in partnership with state government mapping agencies and regional stakeholders. The data in these Work Packages have been captured in collaboration with the Queensland Department of Resources (DNRME). An attribute associated with every feature records the source of update information.

This dataset is GDA2020 Compliant. The source data, and therefore the captured features, were captured as GDA94 (horizontal only). This data has been projected to GDA2020 by using ArcGIS Pro geoprocessing tool Project geoprocessing. Using geographic transformation parameters ‘GDA94 to GDA2020 NTv2 3 Conformal’.

The data has also been processed to remove any redundant vertices by using ArcGIS Pro’s Simplify Line geoprocessing tool. Retain critical points (Douglas-Peucker) method was used for the Simplification Algorithm and a Simplification tolerance of 0.25m. The data was further processed using an ESRI validation in a Repair Geometry geoprocessing tool and deleting any features with Null geometry.
