Description
Abstract / Description:
The Queensland borehole series provides the location of coal, mineral and stratigraphic boreholes, petroleum and gas wells and a subset of water bores drilled in Queensland, as recorded by the Geological Survey of Queensland, Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing, and Regional and Rural Development. As these sites have been drilled under their relevant industry legislation, different information is available for each theme.
Additional Information:
The refreshed borehole series dataset, published daily from 13 October 2020, comprises data sourced from the Department's Geological Properties database. Earlier versions of the borehole data in this series were sourced from the department’s Geoscience and Resource Database (GRDB) - a component of the now deprecated MERLIN resource authority and geoscience system.
To ensure minimal disruption to clients, this dataset maps data values retrieved from the new Geoproperties environment back to historic values as recorded in the original systems, where possible, to ensure continued function for customers.
For detail regarding attribute completeness or spatial accuracy of this data, see the Quality section of the metadata.
Further detail on borehole data can be obtained through the GSQ Open Data Portal and via the GeoResGlobe web application.

Data Quality
Data quality scope:
Level:
dataset
Completeness (omission):
Where a survey plan is attributed to a borehole in this data, a high level of confidence in the accuracy of the location can be assumed. Where there are no survey plans attributed to a borehole in this data, a lower level of spatial accuracy can be assumed as methods of locating a borehole pre-GPS are varied and historically not recorded. Similarly spatial accuracy of contemporary boreholes without a Mine Survey Plan attached differ with the successive generations of handheld GPS technologies, this GPS device accuracy is not recorded against the data.
Consistency (conceptual):
Historically, petroleum and gas well information has been submitted by industry to meet the reporting requirements of the Petroleum Act 1923 and Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004. During this time, information for mineral and coal boreholes were not usually collated from industry reports submitted as a requirement of the Mineral Resources Act 1989. As a result of this, location and metadata information for mineral and coal themes varies in completeness when compared to that of petroleum and gas wells.
With the release of new reporting requirements for minerals and coal, and petroleum and gas tenure holders, as part of amendments to the regulations associated with the above Acts (effective from 1 October 2020), mineral and coal reporting will be mandated and therefore the data collated more comprehensive.
Positional accuracy (external, absolute):
The refreshed borehole dataset, published daily from 13 October 2020, comprises data sourced from the new Department's Geological Properties database. Borehole point features are stored as geometry in this environment. The Latitude and Longitude attributes are derived from this shape information.
Previous to this date, borehole data in this series were sourced from the department’s Geoscience and Resource Database (GRDB) - a component of the MERLIN resource authority and geoscience system. The Latitude and Longitude fields in the published borehole data were directly populated from this environment and point features generated from these values. Thus the data reflected the point of truth location of a borehole with feature class geometry built from these coordinates.
At the time of the migration to the GSQ Geological Properties database, the geometry for any boreholes that existed in the Merlin system (BORE_NO < 80000) were generated from the borehole latitude and longitude as recorded in MERLIN. These data were then projected to GDA2020, to align with the Department's GDA 2020 compliance commitment. As a result of this projection, for some of the boreholes of MERLIN origin, there may be a discrepancy in positional accuracy of <150mm between the location of the borehole in previous versions of the borehole data and the current borehole data as sourced from the new Geological Properties AWS database.
Attribute accuracy (non quantitative):
Where Operator code is null in the data, a new Operator code is yet to be assigned in the new system. This issue will be resolved by the Content Authority as resources become available.
History:
Lineage statement:
Data has been captured from borehole and company reports and notifications, departmental regional project results and wireline logs. Some data are also reinterpreted by departmental staff, e.g. stratigraphy.
